- Question from Spain team -
Please can you give me the scientific name of the Sakurajima Radish.
Raphaus sativus Linne var.macropodus Makino
Please send me the conditions of weather for Radish, because here in this days the temperatures will be below 0C.
- Answer from The Earth Club -
- It was cold and below 0 C. All of vegetables were freezed -
Last week we had the first frost and water freeze here but our radish are growing well because
it was warm in the day time. How to protect them Radish from coldness is very important. I think you have to sow
Sakurajima Radish early and harvest it before Christmas.
Iyanagi or Sao, please can you give me the utilities of the Sakurajima radish.
- Answer from Portugal -
I only know some utilities: soup, salad, pickles, nothing more!
- Answer from The Earth Club -
Potato, fried smashed fish, egg, fried fish paste and radish
One of the good cooking for the Sakurajima Radish is 'Buri Daikon'.
We cook Skurajima radish with Yellow tail fish.
I like 'Oden' or Japanese hotchapotch.
I am going to report a little about Japanese Radish
- We have a lot of Radish varieties in Japan. They are about 200 ? -
A Japanese radish and cabbage are visitor plants introduced into Japan via the Silk Road from the long distance Mediterranean coast. However, Japanese people tried and tried to grow various radishes by crossing. The radishe had a big change in Japan. They are thickness, roundness and length. And it is leaving a color, the taste, and abundant change that plants and shows each feature also at the time of harvest also in the district. The taste of a specialty has been brought to every place as the so called "Ground Japanese radish."
The Sakurajima Radish, now we are growing with you is one of them. It is famous for the biggest radish in Japan or in the world.
It is said that Sakurajima Radish does not grow except in Sakurajima Island. Is it true? It is a project
theme of this project. Can we grow this radish in other places?
Some schools in northern Japan, they had snow and 0C last manth. It looked very difficult to grow them there like you. For example ; You can visit here from the main page of this conterst.

You can watch some ideas there how to grow Sakurajima Radish under cold places. They are a green house in a green house, try to grow in a pot in the room or the sun ray refrector etc. We hope you grow yours well.
You have to make small harvest report for contentest.
Harvested radish data, Weight = leaves + Root , length of the circumference and picture of the Radish.
